The answer to this question can be found starting in chapter 16. Killer Kane (Max's dad) shows up and secretly takes Max away from Gram and Grim. The first place that Max and his father go to is Iggy's and Loretta's place. Iggy and Loretta are both nervous about the whole situation. They know what Killer Kane is capable of, and they don't really want any more to do with him than they have to. Iggy's solution is to take Kane and Max to an empty house close by. The owner is away for the holidays, so Kane figures the place is safe to stay in for a couple of days. Kane tries to have some conversations with Max that attempt to show he isn't completely evil; however, Max is tied up for all of these conversations. Max will eventually be rescued from the hands of his evil father because of Freak's actions.

Max has an eventful night on Christmas Eve. He spends the first part of the evening having one of the best times he can remember, exchanging gifts with his grandparents, Gwen, and Freak. The author wants us to feel that Max is finally happy, finally getting comfortable with himself and his life; this way, we feel even more sharply the despair that Max must experience later that same night.

When Max's father shows up in the Down Under, Max's attitude is one of defeat. Killer Kane takes Max first to Iggy's and Loretta's apartment, where Loretta is intoxicated--her way of celebrating. The couple is obviously afraid of Kane, so Iggy soon smuggles Max and Kane over to a house whose owner is out of town for the holidays. The father and son spend the rest of Christmas Eve night in this house, Max tied to a chair and Kane sleeping fitfully between telling Max stories--obvious lies--about his innocence.
