The Fourth of July celebration is a memorable one for both Max and Kevin. For Max, it is the first time he has been allowed to attend the festivities without being accompanied by Grim and Gram. But more importantly, Independence Day marks the beginning of Freak the Mighty. After the boys are accosted by Tony D.'s gang, Max hoists Kevin onto his shoulders, and Freak the Mighty is born. Kevin has a much better view of the fireworks from atop Max's shoulders, and he knows all of the chemicals that are used in the fireworks display. When the rockets begin,

"Magnesium!" he shouts as the white sparkles glitter down over the pond.

Kevin identifies the other chemicals one by one: potassium chlorate, potassium nitrate, sulphur, aluminum, copper, oxygen and strontium nitrate.

... and I'm thinking whoa! is there anything this little dude doesn't know?
