Why does Max fear his father in chapter 16 of Freak the Mighty?
Max's father, Killer Kane, is a scary fellow. He's been in jail for killing Max's mother, but in chapter sixteen after getting out he comes to Max in the middle of the night. Max tells us that he has feared his father getting out of jail and coming for him:
"Somehow I always knew this would happen, that he would come for me, in the middle of the night, that I would wake up to find him there, filling the room, and that I'd feel empty."
Max is also afraid that his father will hurt Grim and Gram. Max says "making noise is the last thing I want to do" because he knows if he makes noise then his grandparents will wake up, and if they come down to his room they will try to stop Killer Kane and likely end up getting hurt themselves.

"A Chip off the Old Block," suggests another fear of Max's. Killer Kane uses this phrase to say that Max looks just like his father. But Max does not want to be like his father. Max may have his father's size, but that does not mean Max is exactly like his father.
Why can't Max sleep in Freak the Mighty?
In chapter 10 of Freak the Mighty, Max is having trouble falling asleep. He is anxious and excited because he and Freak are preparing to go on a quest at three in the morning. Earlier that day, Freak had informed Max that he has located some sort of treasure down a storm drain to the sewer. Freak had told Max that three o'clock in the morning will be the best time to retrieve the treasure because it is the darkest time of the night. They will also dress in black and darken their faces with dirt to be as stealthy as possible.
Even though Max sets an alarm to wake him up at two o'clock in the morning, he finds that he is too restless to fall asleep because he keeps "waiting for the alarm to go off." He wonders if Freak was telling the truth about the treasure in the sewer or if it is just some fanciful adventure he dreamed up. It does not help that there is a cricket in the room, whose chirping is further distracting Max. He spends much of the night occupying himself by fruitlessly hunting down the cricket. At 2:30 a.m., Max gives up on the idea of sleep or catching the cricket and goes to wait outside of Freak's window.
In Philbrick's Freak the Mighty, why does Max go under his bed?
Maxwell Kane lives with his mother's parents. His grandpa made his a bedroom in the basement, which isn't much to look at, but he actually calls it the "down under." When life gets really difficult for Max, though, he hides under his bed. In Chapter Five, he explains that he goes to a special place in his head where his mind drifts like clouds and he forgets everything. Later, Kevin's mom, Gwen, panics when she sees her little boy with a big boy who looks like Killer Kane. Max doesn't know that Gwen panics because he looks like his killer father, so it hurts deeply. Max hides under his bed in his deep, dark basement room. Max explains that it is easier to get to that happy place in his head when he is under his bed. He just stares at the bed springs and the darkness helps to take him away from his problems. Max explains being under his bed as follows:
". . . and before long I'm somewhere else, sort of floating, and it's so cool and empty in there, you don't have to think about anything. You're nothing, you're nobody, nothing matters, you're not even there. Time out" (21).
In conclusion, Max specifically goes under his bed this time because he feels rejected by Kevin's mother. She completely flipped out when she saw Max with her son and it made him feel like trash. She does call to apologize, though, so Max doesn't stay under his bed for long.
Why is Max afraid of his father in Freak the Mighty?
Max has every reason to be afraid of his father, "Killer Kane," who killed Max's mother. "Killer Kane" kidnaps Max on Christmas Eve, takes him to the tenements, behaving in a threatening, intimidating way the entire time, ties Max up and leaves him alone. When Loretta Lee tries to help Max escape, "Killer Kane" comes back and tries to strangle her, at which point Max tries to stop him, yells that he remembers his father killing his mother, which in turn causes "Killer Kane" to try to kill Max. Luckily, the police and Freak arrive, Freak armed with a lethal mix of soap, vinegar and curry powder, claiming that it was sulfuric acid as he squirts it into Kane's eyes.
How does Max in Freak the Mighty feel about his resemblance to his father?
Max's father is known as "Killer Kane." At the beginning of the story, he is in prison for murdering Max's mother. He has an infamous, frightening reputation, and Max, unfortunately, looks a lot like him.
In chapter 1, Max overhears his maternal grandparents, Grim and Gram, talking about how he, Max, is "getting to look like Him," meaning his father. Grim also says that the resemblance is more than physical, and that Max, ominously, is "like" his father in terms of his personality. Max doesn't explicitly reveal how these comparisons make him feel, but, as mentioned later in the novel in chapter 5, Grim and Gram clearly and unsurprisingly think that Max's father was "sick in the head." One can infer, therefore, that Max doesn't feel particularly flattered or pleased with the comparisons.
In chapter 5, Gwen remarks upon the fact that Max is "the spitting image" of his father. Max says that this ordinarily wouldn't be "such a big deal," but because his father is in prison, it is a "big deal." However, it is only a "big deal" because everybody else seems embarrassed on his behalf and "acts like it," meaning that his father's imprisonment "should be a secret."
In short, Max doesn't seem to be especially bothered about his resemblance to his father. It is perhaps not something that he is particularly pleased about but neither is it something which he seems to worry about. The only time when it becomes "a big deal" is when other people feel embarrassed for him.
What has Max always feared about his father in Freak the Mighty?
Max is flat out afraid of his dad. I would be too, if I knew for sure that my dad had killed my mom. That is scary stuff. He's a hard man and having spent time in prison didn't exactly help. Oh, and his nickname is Killer Kane. AND he is soon to be paroled from prison. Max is afraid that he is going to see his dad. Max is afraid that his dad is going to come and take him. The following is in Max's own words.
"I always knew this would happen, that he would come for me, in the night, that I would wake up to find him there."
That's exactly what happened, too. Killer Kane abducted Max. Luckily the police took care of business fairly quickly, and Killer Kane was put right back in prison. When that happens, that's about the safest that Max has ever felt in his entire life.
In Freak the Mighty, does Max have issues with his father?
This question is a difficult question to answer, since it doesn't define "daddy issues." The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders does not recognize "daddy issues" as an official term or as a disorder, so in that regard, Max does not have daddy issues.
On the other hand, if "daddy issue" refers to the relationship that a person has/had (or didn't have) with a father/caregiver, then yes, Max has daddy issues. By that definition, every person ever has and/or had daddy issues. Every person is influenced by nature and nurture. Fathers genetically influence their offspring. Fathers also influence their offspring by interacting (or not interacting) with their offspring.
Max strongly resembles his father, who happens to be a murderer. Unfortunately, that resemblance influences people's opinions of Max. Even his own grandparents are wary of Max. That "issue" is a direct result of his "daddy's" actions. Max also remembers what his father did to his mother. Coupled with the knowledge that he looks like his father and that people are wary of him as if he could behave like his father, Max has zero self confidence in himself. In some ways, Max is scared of himself because of who his father is. I would definitely call that a "daddy issue."
If this question is looking for a more concrete daddy issue, then I would go with the section of the book when Max's father kidnaps him.
