Chapter 2 Summary
The narrator presents a time line of Flaubert's life. It is formatted like a two-column table in a reference book: Year and Event. He breaks the time line into three parts.
The first part begins with the 1821 birth of Gustave to Achille (a prominent surgeon) and Anne. They are a middle class family with property in Rouen. In 1825, a nurse is hired to care for Gustave.
