Chapter 9 Summary
Davis recalls the joyful memory of when her sister Danielle was born. The children were so excited that walking many hours to the hospital to see her was no hardship. Before this, Viola had been the baby of the family, but now she took on the role of big sister. Though Viola continued to struggle in school and personally, Danielle gave her life new meaning because she made Viola feel loved and seen. Davis recounts an incident that frightened her, when she came home to see Danielle covered in blood, which turned out to be her mother’s. MaMama had fled and was found in public in the drugstore, badly beaten. Everyone interrogated the girls about what had happened, but they would not answer.
Given their abusive home, Viola felt that she had to protect Danielle at any cost. During college, one day someone came to tell her that something had happened to Danielle. It turned out that a man had sexually assaulted her. They took the man to court but barely got anything from him. Viola talks about the pain of realizing that she could not truly protect her sister, but only love her and be there for her.
