What is Maggie's age in "Everyday Use"?
Good question! She and Dee are close in age, but Dee is older. The narrator tells us only this...Maggie was burned in a fire as a child which makes her seem a lot younger than Dee due to Maggie's self esteem issues and the scars on her body from the fire. Although we don't know for sure, I get the feeling she is only a couple of years younger than Dee due to the way she stands up for her feelings and rights to the quilts and butter churn when Dee comes home from college. So, I guess that would put her in the 18-20 year range.
Good Luck and thanks for using Enotes!
Who does Maggie marry in "Everyday Use"?
The answer to this question is actually only mentioned very briefly in this excellent story and comes towards the end when Mama refuses to give the quilts to Wangero, otherwise known as Dee. The idea of Maggie marrying anybody seems rather slim, especially because of the animal imagery that is associated with her character as she "cowers" away from the other more confident characters in the story. However, note what Mama says when she says to Dee why she can't have the quilts she has chosen:
"The truth is," I said, "I promised to give them quilts to Maggie, for when she married John Thomas."
We are never told more about who John Thomas is or when they are planning to marry, but this is the man that the story tells us Maggie is going to marry.
