Student Question
In "Everyday Use," who is your most and least favorite character?
Quick answer:
In "Everyday Use," Dee is the least favorite character due to her patronizing attitude and disregard for her family's wishes, particularly shown when she tries to claim family quilts promised to her sister, Maggie. Dee's arrogance and disconnection from her cultural roots further contribute to her unfavorable perception. Conversely, Maggie is favored for her underdog status, quiet demeanor, and lack of confidence, which evoke sympathy and likability compared to her domineering sister.
Well, the character I like the least is definitely Dee. This is because of the way that she patronises her mother and sister and seems to treat everything in the house as her own, disregarding whatever wishes her mother and sister may have. This is most clearly shown when she starts asking for things, and then comes to ask for the quilt that Mama had promised to Maggie. Note the way that she claims possession of them even before she has been officially given them:
She held the quilts securely in her arms, stroking them.
I also dislike her because of her arrogance in believing herself superior to her sister and mother, and the way that she has forgotten her own cultural history in exchange for a cultural history that belongs to a continent she has never visited.
I must admit, I do feel that I have a soft spot for Maggie, as she is definitely the underdog in the story. The way in which she is so quiet and described by Mama like "a lame animal" and with no confidence makes us feel greatly sorry for her. Although she clearly lacks confidence, I think she is a much more likable character than her domineering and overpowering sister.
