I just moved to the mountains in the South from the flat prairies of the Midwest, and I find the mountains stunning to look at but a bit claustrophobic. Love the idea, though.  Oceans fascinate me, and I like the flatness of the desert, and you didn't give me the option of the open prairies (which I would quickly have chosen).  Guess that leaves cities, where people can see and be and do anything they want.  There's culture and history and movement and energy.  I choose the city.  Thanks for asking!

I have always been fascinated by water, especially creeks and rivers. I love nothing better than to listen to water as it flows. To me, river rocks are more beautiful than diamonds. I  love their colors and shapes. If I were a place, I'd have to be a creek or river.

This is a very interesting questions that has produced some really thoughtful responses. I prefer the water and beach to the other choices, so that would probably be my first choice. I would have people walking, laying and playing on me for most of the year, although it may get kind of lonely in the winter (unless I'm a beach on St. Thomas, which is where I'd prefer). As a city, I'm afraid I would become too dirty and abused. As a desert, I would be without human companionship. As I mountain, I would appreciate the many people who admired me from afar, so this would probably be my second choice. And I do like your reason for choosing a mountain.

I believe that much of this is contingent on personal preference.  Having said this, I can say that a city might be the best option for me.  Being a cosmopolitan individual who needs a certain level of comfort offered in the city, I think that a city presents itself with more of what I need.  The abilities to go to a museum in the afternoon, take a walk along a busy street at dusk, or take in the local art culture are critically important to me.  Being able to browse shops and bookstores that are hidden and tucked away from the madding crowd in a city is something that holds special meaning to me.  I think that the heterogeneity of the city and its diverse nature is also quite comforting to me.

While a desolate place, the desert is, perhaps, the only place that may be left untouched by the destructive hand of man.  After the ruinous fires in California caused by pyromania, the cutting away and through mountains in the name of progress, and the catastrophic oil spill of negligence and greed in Louisiana, neither mountain nor beach and ocean are safe from, as Marc Antony of Julius Caesar says, "the evil that men do" that is often initiated in the city.

Vast and oblivious to the sun and fire, and too forboding for man's destructive presence, the desert alone remains sovereign.

The reason I would not choose a city is because cities can often be dirty and experience various amounts of crime, although cities can be very beautiful and exciting. I would not want to be a desert because they are just too hot. So I guess this leaves the beach or the mountains. Although they both sound very nice I would have to choose the mountains. Mountains are very majestic. They are old, full of life, and very exhilarating. They have rivers that run through them and lots of vegetation. There is nothing better than fresh air and the great outdoors.

I am with you. I would be a mountain. Mountains can withstand so much weather and remain unchanged. Look at the four dynamic seasons and how they beat on a mountain. The spring and fall beat the mountain with rough winds and rain. The summer burns the forests therein. The winter blankets mountains with snow. A mountain can take it all, and that's what I like to be able to do, take whatever comes my way. I think that makes me strong.

Mountains are also pure. The city can be polluted, and so can the beach. You hear people talk about the fresh mountain air. The desert would be nice for a while, but it's so hot that things die there. A mountain would offer great opportunities for all types of life.

The idea of being a mountain is pretty intriguing, but I would like to be a city because there's always so much change and so many things happening.  It would be fun to try and be a city where people were happy etc.  Of course, you'd also likely have to deal with the knowledge of all the terrible things that people that live inside your city limits do and feel, so that is a bit of a buzz kill.

The beach might be fun too since you would get to see all the amazing storms that roll in and also enjoy the peaceful change of the tides and other things that weren't so violent.  I am going to change my mind and go for the beach instead.

Out of the choices you have given, I think that I would most like to be a beach, especially if I were not some crowded tourist beach like Waikiki or something.

The reason I would like to be a beach is that I grew up on an island and so the ocean has a special significance for me.  The ocean is so vast and empty that it is very peaceful to sit on a beach and look out at it.  At other times, though, the ocean can be really violent and awe inspiring.  I think I would like to be the beach so I could experience those moods and more...
