Student Question

How does the internet impact businesses, education, and personal lives?

Quick answer:

The internet significantly impacts businesses, education, and personal lives by enhancing communication and information access. For businesses, it offers new advertising avenues and recruitment methods. In education, it revolutionizes research, studying, and access to online courses. Personally, it facilitates social interaction and online shopping. While economist Tyler Cowen argues the internet's economic benefits are less than expected, it undeniably improves users' quality of life. The internet's widespread influence brings both positive and negative consequences.

The most obvious response to your question at large is that Internet has made communication and information gathering faster and more convenient.  However, if your essay requires you to write from personal experience and observation over actual research, it would be a good idea for you to jot down some personal examples of this, things you've actually experienced or personally witnessed.  Be specific.  Use vivid detail in your description.  And be sure to show how the Internet is connected in the benefits.

I've just finished reading Tyler Cowen's book The Great Stagnation. It is one of the most-discussed books about economics of the year. Cowen argues that the internet has not produced as much economic benefit as it was expected to do, and he also claims that it has not produced as much economic benefit as past innovations. He thinks that the internet may yet be economically beneficial, and he concedes that the internet has improved the quality of life for this who use it. Nevertheless, you may want to take a look at his arguments.  I suspect that if you search on Google for "Tyler Cowen and the internet," you will find many pro and con opinions.

This is such a broad question, it may need to be moved to a discussion for a more complete answer.  The Internet has impacted many areas of society in a variety of ways.  Businesses now use the Internet for advertising, seeking employees, background checks on employees, and many other uses.  Businesses are no longer limited to advertising and seeking employees through television and printed materials.  The Internet provides a plethora of new resources.

Education has also been affected by the Internet.  Students study, research, read, and learn in very different ways since the Internet became what it is today.  Students can find research or read books online.  Students can even take courses online from the comfort of their own homes and in their free time.

Personal lives have also been affected by the Internet because of the freedom of information and social media.  We can now chat with our friends or shop online without every having to leave the house.  Of course, all these changes have both positive and negative consequences.  Regardless of whether you think the Internet is progressive or destructive, it  has changed the way we as a people live and interrelate.
