In Ender’s Game, Mazer Rackam was a heroic leader of a past battle with the Buggers who did very well as a leader of the earth army, fighting against the Buggers with inferior weaponry, but staving off the attacks by bravery, creativity, and intelligence.  When Ender is asked to join the Army School as a candidate for the next war’s leadership, he is familiar with the footsteps he is being asked to follow (he had seen the films of Rackam’s battle).  Ender’s decision to join the effort is made when Colonel Graff says “Maybe you’ll hate me for coming to your house today. But if there’s a chance that because you’re in the fleet, Mankind will survive…then I’m going to ask you to do it.”  His answer was “I’m afraid, but I’ll go with you.”  Ender realizes the gravity of the mission and the changes to his life that are about to happen.  He also realizes his family relations, especially with his two siblings, Peter and Valentine, will be permanently altered.
