Describe the park where Gortsby sits in Saki's "Dusk."

The setting for Saki's story, "Dusk" is London at Hyde Park Corner where there is a park that is bound by bushes and fence against the busy noise of traffic and blazing city lights with the "bustling pavements of Knightsbridge."  Still, there is a burst of light onto the park grounds by "a blazing stretch of many-tiered windows."  Interestingly, Grotsky sits where he can watch people go their way "in the dark stretches between the lamp-lights" as they pass by.

The arrangement of shadows and light in the park allows Saki to employ his motif of deception in his short story.  While the people who sit on the benches in the park wish to be in the shadows so as to be unobtrusive, Norman Gortsby uses this quality to observe them cynically in his own disillusionment, "labelling his fellow wanderers" as they go their ways in the dark stretches.

In "Dusk," how is the park where Norman Gortsby dwells described?

When the story of "Dusk" opens, the setting is a park. The main character Gortsby is sitting on a park bench. He is noticing the defeated who come out at dusk, the time of day when no one will notice their humble clothing.

Gortsby is sitting on a park bench around 6:30 pm on an evening in March. The park is known as Hyde Park in London. It is the time of day when the defeated come out. It is a time of day when the defeated will barely be noticed because it is almost dark. Gortsby notices the shadows of people who live defeated lives:

He notices other people who are barely visible in the gathering gloom as they walk in the park or sit on benches.

Dusk is the time of day when tricksters come out. The young man who is a scam artist comes out at dusk. He shares his scam with Gortsby and eventually walks away with Gortsby's money.
