Student Question

How do Don Quixote's actions and views on virtue and honor compare to the knight in The Grey Palfrey?

Quick answer:

In comparing the actions of these two characters, you might want to note that Don Quixote is not a knight. Meanwhile, the hero of The Grey Palfrey is presented as a true knight. Yet both men appear to act in a generally virtuous way. They’re both dedicated to their true loves. Their loyalty could be called honorable. Although, you’ll probably want to mention that Quixote’s true love has more to do with his imagination than reality.

You might want to start your compare and contrast by noting that one of the knights is not actually a knight. Remember, Alonso Quixano is a hidalgo. He’s a part of the Spanish nobility, not a knight. However, after some binge reading, he starts to think that he is a knight and renames himself Don Quixote.

The knight in The Grey Palfrey is, in fact, a knight. He’s not pretending. Unlike Quixote, the knight doesn’t have a lot of money. However, the knight in The Grey Palfrey does have a moneyed uncle. The knight enlists his uncle to try and help him marry the girl of his dreams, but the uncle betrays his relative and tries to marry her instead.

In Don Quixote, the wannabe knight is deceived frequently. Although, you could claim that Quixote is mostly deceived by himself: he’s delusional. You might want to review chapter eight in part one. In this chapter, Quixote convinces himself he’s saving a kidnapped princess. In reality, he’s harassing two friars. Although, I suppose you could give Quixote the benefit of the doubt; you could argue that Quixote meant to do well.

As for the knight in The Grey Palfrey, you could say that he, too, tries to conduct himself in a virtuous manner. Remember, both protagonists have specific love interests. They both appear to pursue their love interests in an honorable way. They both feel like they’re acting on authentic emotions and feelings, which seems like an honorable thing to do. Although, you should probably point out that The Grey Palfrey knight’s true love has more of a basis in reality than the one true love of Quixote.
