"Love That Moves The Sun"

(Magill's Quotations in Context)

Context: In these, the final lines of one of the world's supreme works of beauty, power, and wisdom, Dante focuses his belief on the central tenet of the Christian faith: L'amor che move il sole e l'altre stelle. The occasion is the contemplation of the brightness of the Divine Majesty, the glimpse of the great mystery of the Trinity, the union of man with God.

Here vigour fail'd the towering fantasy:
But yet the will roll'd onward, like a wheel
In even motion, by the Love impell'd,
That moves the sun in Heaven and all the stars.
