In Allegiant, the final novel of Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy, Tris Prior, the protagonist and main point-of-view character, undertakes a mission to prevent the Bureau of Genetic Welfare in Chicago from conducting an experiment with memory serum on the city's population. This is generally understood as a suicide mission, and, although Tris manages to escape the death serum, she is shot by David, the head of the Bureau, just as her mission is accomplished. As she dies, Tris sees a vision of her mother reaching out to her. In the epilogue, Tris's friend Tobias rides a zip line to spread the ashes of her cremated body across the city of Chicago.

The Divergent books were made into films, the most recent of which, Allegiant, was released in 2016. At the end of this film, Tris was not yet dead, and there was some pressure from fans that she should remain alive even in the proposed sequel, Ascendant. However, Allegiant was a critical failure and underperformed at the box office, which led to plans for Ascendant being scrapped. Therefore, whether or not Tris would have died in the proposed final movie, she remains alive at the end of the existing film trilogy.
