The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank chronicles the life the author led during World War II as she and her family hid from the Nazis. Specifically, Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl who went into hiding with her family and several others in Amsterdam during the war. During the time that they were hiding, Anne kept a diary, addressing all of her entries to “Dear Kitty.” In the diary, Anne reveals all of her thoughts, desires, and fears to Kitty, as she hopes that the Nazis do not discover the secret attic.

They were fortunate in that they were assisted by several of Mr. Frank’s employees who bring them food and sometimes clothes and presents. Anne writes:

Father didn't have a lot of people working in his office, just Mr. Kugler, Mr. Kleiman, Miep and a twenty-three-year-old typist named Bep Voskuijl, all of whom were informed of our coming. Mr. Voskuijl, Bep's father, works in the warehouse, along with two assistants, none of whom were told anything.

The Franks and the others try to make their lives as normal as possible. However, given the close quarters in which they lived, the fear that overhung their daily activities, and the need to be quiet in order to remain undiscovered, they lived under tremendous stress.

Their only contact with the outside world comes from the people who help them and bring them news, gossip, food, and other items. At one point, Bep Voskuijl buys new clothes for Anne:

Bep bought new skirts for Margot and me at The Bijenkorf. The fabric is hideous, like the burlap bag potatoes come in. Just the kind of thing the department stores wouldn't dare sell in the olden days, now costing 24.00 guilders [Margot's] and 7.75 guilders [mine].

In her dreams, Anne also buys clothes for herself. Contemplating life after the war, Anne daydreams about the things she will do and the items that she will purchase. She writes:

I imagine that...I've gone to Switzerland...Daddy gives me 150 guilders…and tells me to buy everything 1 think I'll need, all for myself…I set off with Bernd and buy:

3 cotton undershirts @ 0.50 = 1.50

3 cotton underpants @ 0.50 = 1.50

3 wool undershirts @ O. 75 = 2.25

3 wool underpants @ O. 75 = 2.25

2 petticoats @ 0.50 = 1.00

2 bras (smallest size) @ 0.50 = 1.00

5 pajamas @ 1.00 = 5.00

1 summer robe @ 2.50 = 2.50
