Hidden in an annex to a warehouse where Miep Gies works in Amsterdam, the Franks are aided by Miep and her husband, Jan, who are members of the underground against the Axis powers of World War II. The term underground was applied originally to the French resistance to Nazi occupation in their country. As the Nazi occupation spread, so did the resistance movement.
