Early in the play version of Anne Frank’s diary, Peter and Anne are shown growing very close and playing with one another. Their relationship will eventually grow from playful to romantic as they age and become more mature, but at the beginning of the play, they are mainly playing with and teasing one another. The very beginning of act 1, scene 3, starts out with Peter looking for his shoes, and he begins asking Anne if she took them. She attempts to pass it off innocently, acting as if she has done nothing, but she has.

Peter begins to chase her around the house, grabbing at the shoes she carries. She dodges him and they run around playfully. This act is an innocent example of their relationship, which is quickly growing more flirtatious. The two youths eventually fall in love with one another.
