Student Question

Does Yente die in The Devil's Arithmetic?

Quick answer:

Yes, Yente dies in "The Devil's Arithmetic." She is one of the four girls Hannah, also known as Chaya, befriends before Shmuel's wedding. Yente, along with Shifre and Esther, perishes in a concentration camp. The fourth girl, Rachel, dies before reaching the camp. Their deaths are tragic, as Hannah forms close bonds with them, sharing stories of her life in New Rochelle, which fascinate the girls raised in an Orthodox Jewish environment.

Unfortunately, yes, Yente does die. One of the four girls that Hannah/Chaya meets before Shmuel's wedding, Yente perishes in a concentration camp along with two of the other three girls, Shifre and Esther. (The fourth girl, Rachel, dies before reaching the camp.)

What is particularly tragic about the death of these young girls is that Hannah, in the guise of Chaya, had struck up a close relationship with them. The girls would listen with rapt attention as Chaya told them about her life in New Rochelle. They are amazed to discover that Chaya has friends who are gentiles (non-Jews). Not only that, but she goes to school and even goes shopping on the Sabbath. To these young girls, who've been brought up in an Orthodox Jewish household, this is all rather strange to say the least. But still intensely fascinating, all the same.
