What historical reference is discussed on page 185 of Devil in the White City and what does it mean?

There is not much on this page that could really be seen as a historical reference.  There is, of course, the reference to the Eiffel Tower.  The tower was put up as an entry arch for the World’s Fair in Paris in 1889.   There is also a reference to the Statue of Liberty.

Another thing that could be seen as a historical reference is the mention of ferris wheel cars the size of a “Pullman.”  Pullman cars were a kind of train car that was made by the Pullman company not far from Chicago.  The company would be involved in terrible strikes with a great deal of violence in 1894.
