Leigh had been writing to Mr. Henshaw for a school assignment.  When Mr. Henshaw answered his letter he included questions for Leigh.  One of the questions, number 5, was do you have any pets?  Leigh responds that he does not have any pets because when his mom and dad divorced, "mom got him and dad got the dog."  The dogs name was Bandit.  One day when Leigh's father stopped in Nevada the dog just jumped into his truck and it was wearing a bandanna.  They kept the dog and named it Bandit.  Leigh misses Bandit, but he tells Mr. Henshaw that the dog probably enjoys riding around with his father more than he would enjoy living in the city with him.
