There are multiple smaller themes to this book; see the discussion of themes in the quicknote for more specifics on them. However, as far as the overarching theme, I'd say it is the triumph of the human spirit. Daniel and his family found ways to be positive and even loving in the midst of Nazi oppression, and they maintained their spirits even when all else was taken from them.
