In The Crucible, what report does Giles give to the Proctors?
Quick answer:
Giles Corey informs the Proctors that his wife, Martha Corey, has been arrested on charges of witchcraft. He explains that a man named Walcott accused her of bewitching his pigs. Francis Nurse also reports that his wife, Rebecca Nurse, has been arrested. Both women are respected church members. The news is followed by Ezekiel Cheever's arrival with a warrant for Elizabeth Proctor's arrest.
While Reverend Hale is visiting John Proctor's home, Giles Corey arrives and frantically tells John that the court officials have arrested his wife, Martha Corey. Francis Nurse then enters Proctor's home immediately after Giles Corey arrives and reports that the court officials have also arrested his wife, Rebecca Nurse. Francis proceeds to beg Reverend Hale to speak with Deputy Governor Danforth about the arrests and mentions that both Rebecca and Martha are revered members of the church with close relationships to God. When Reverend Hale asks Giles Corey what complaint was made against his wife, Giles responds by saying that a man named Walcott accused Martha of bewitching his pigs. Apparently, Martha had sold Walcott a pig four or five years ago and he did not properly take care of the animal. The pig that Martha sold Walcott ended up dying a short time after she sold it to him. Walcott is now claiming that none of his pigs can live for an extended period of time because Martha bewitched them. Shortly after Giles and Francis report that their wives have been arrested, Ezekiel Cheever arrives with a warrant for Elizabeth Proctor's arrest.
