Danforth's revelation and proposition concerning Elizabeth in The Crucible
Summary:
In The Crucible, Danforth reveals that Elizabeth is pregnant and proposes to delay her execution until after she gives birth. This revelation is intended to pacify John Proctor and others concerned about her fate, buying time for the court while maintaining the appearance of justice.
What news does Danforth share about Elizabeth in act 3 of The Crucible, and what deal does he propose?
Proctor comes to the court and tells them that his wife, Elizabeth, has not seen any spirits. She has signed a deposition to prove this claim. Danforth is in shock and worries over this new twist.
Danforth does not want anyone to be able to prove that they are innocent. It would look badly on him. He then tells Proctor that Elizabeth is pregnant. Proctor is in shock, but tells the men that if his wife says she is pregnant, then she is. She is unable to tell a lie, he tells them. Proctor is ready to go into the courtroom and announce what his wife has said. Danforth knows that if this happens, the whole situation will change for him. He offers to let Elizabeth stay alive for one year and have the baby, if Proctor will promise not to go to court. Proctor, being an honest man, can't do this. Danforth is still proving that he has control over the situation.
Danforth thinks he is being reasonable. He knows how bad it would look on him, if he had a pregnant woman executed, but he doubts that Elizabeth is pregnant. He thinks she is just saying this to try to save her life. He knows how bad it would look if Proctor brings his charges to the court. He is knows he is in a tight spot and is willing to do whatever he can to stay in control.
What news does Danforth share with John Proctor about Elizabeth in The Crucible?
In act 3, John Proctor travels into Salem with Mary Warren and instructs her to tell the truth about the witch trials. After Mary Warren testifies that Abigail Williams and the girls are lying, Deputy Governor Danforth asks Proctor what his purpose is for addressing the court and he responds by saying that he hopes to free his wife. Danforth understands the gravity of Mary Warren's claim and the threat that John Proctor poses to his court. He then tells John,
"Mr. Proctor, this morning, your wife send me a claim in which she states that she is pregnant now." (Miller, 95)
Proctor is astonished to hear that Elizabeth is pregnant and swears that she is telling the truth. Danforth responds by saying that the court officials are willing to wait until she shows signs of her pregnancy and will save her life for an entire year if he drops the charges. Essentially, Danforth wishes to use Elizabeth's pregnancy as leverage against Proctor in hopes that he will drop the charges and stop challenging the court. However, John Proctor demonstrates his integrity by refusing to drop the charges and continues to defend his innocent friends, Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey.
In Act III of The Crucible, Danforth informs John Proctor that his wife, Elizabeth, is pregnant. Since she has been in jail since Abigail accused her of sending her spirit out and stabbing her in the stomach. While doctors say that they cannot find any signs that she is pregnant, John tells the court that Elizabeth cannot lie, so if she says she is pregnant she must be. This becomes important late in the act when Danforth questions Elizabeth on John and Abigail’s affair. When asked if she has any knowledge of John committing lechery, she lies for her husband.
In her life, sir, she have never lied. There are them that cannot sing, and them that cannot weep—my wife cannot lie. I have paid much to learn it, sir.
