Hunter Jordan, James' stepfather, was a very unusual man. James was struck by the old fashioned clothes that Jordan wore, the fact that he was not interested in civil rights or the Mets and that he paid attention in church. He also cared deeply for his children and was very interested in their schoolwork. He collected jazz records and antique furniture. However, the reader is struck by the fact that he doesn't live with his wife or family.He says life with them is too chaotic.  Instead, he lives in Brooklyn during the week and visits the family on weekends.
