In The Chronicles of Narnia, the Deep Magic was a set of laws laid down by the Emperor-beyond-the-Sea. This was the founding law of Narnia, inscribed upon the Stone Table, the firestones on the Secret Hill, and the Emperor's scepter. Deep Magic stipulated that Jadis, the White Witch, had the legal authority to kill every traitor in the land, and that if anyone tried to deny her this right Narnia would be destroyed in an apocalyptic deluge of fire and water.

The Deeper Magic is a hidden law that was written on the Stone Table before the dawn of time, before Narnia even existed. It states that if an innocent being offers his or her own life in place of a traitor's, then their subsequent death will be reversed and they will be restored to life. This is what happens to Aslan after he sacrifices his life to save Edmund's. The Chronicles of Narnia are a Christian allegory, and so Aslan's selfless actions can be seen as representing Christ's sacrifice on the cross.
