The children really enjoy singing together.  For perhaps the first time in the morning, Christy's lesson plan to have the children sing brought all the different ages together; the younger children and the older children all harmonized together, and the older boys, like Wraight Holt and Lundy, temporarily forgot their plans for mischief and just enjoyed themselves.

Despite their impoverished conditions, the children were brought up to enjoy music as part of their heritage and tradition.  They may have not known "America," but Christy quickly discovers that music could be a way to bring the different groups of children together at school.
