Student Question

In The Catcher in the Rye, why does Holden flee Antolini's apartment?

Quick answer:

Holden flees Antolini's apartment because he wakes up to find Mr. Antolini's hand on his head, which terrifies him. This gesture is perceived by Holden as a possible sexual advance, prompting him to leave abruptly. Although Holden rationalizes his reaction by accusing Mr. Antolini of inappropriate behavior, his deeper fear of intimacy and connection is what truly drives him away from the situation.
