Simon Snow is the main character. He is an orphan and magician. He attends the Watford School for Magicks and is in the 8th grade. He is called the “Chosen One” and is thought to be Greatest Mage. Simon is questioning his sexuality and kisses Baz, his roommate. He ultimately decides to act on his feelings and figure out his sexuality later. Simon is under significant stress, as he is jokingly called the "worst Chosen One ever." He is recovering from his breakup with Agatha and feels that his mentor is avoiding him. He struggles to get his wand to work and embarrasses himself at school. All this makes him a very lovable and sympathetic character.

Baz Grimm-Pitch is Simon’s roommate. Baz is kidnapped by numptys and is held in a coffin; he is eventually rescued by his aunt. Baz is also Simon’s love interest. Baz is openly gay throughout the novel.

Natasha Grimm-Pitch is Baz’s mother and the former headmistress of the Watford School for Magick. She died in an attack on the school by vampires. Her ghost returns to Simon’s room, looking for Baz. When Baz is not there, she leaves her message with Simon. She asks that Baz find her killer, Nicodemus.

Penny Bunce is Simon’s best friend.

Agatha Wellbelove is Simon’s ex-girlfriend. She is consumed with finding a partner who will provide her with prestige. She breaks up with Simon.
