Carry On is set in a fantasy world comparable to that of Harry Potter. It follows Simon Snow in his mishap adventures of love. Rowell has added a flair in her humor and twists on the "Chosen One" idea planted in the Harry Potter world. She mentions intentional nods to the Harry Potter series but has made this novel her own. Simon has been "chosen," but he is still figuring out how to not set things on fire and how to keep his social life from falling apart. In addition to maintaining his sanity, he is also balancing friendships and relationships. His girlfriend, Agatha, breaks up with him, as she is in search of a partner who will provide her with prestige. Over time, Simon comes to recognize his attraction to his irritating roommate, Baz. However, Baz is imprisoned by "numptys" and made to sleep in a coffin. Baz is rescued by his aunt and returns to Simon. From that point, their love story follows in a hilariously written account. Carry On falls in line with the Young Adult romantic genre that Rowell has previously written in. Eleanor & Park is another story written by Rowell that shares love story of an odd couple. Rowell has been praised for providing young adult readers with diverse love stories that challenge gender and race norms.
