Student Question
How does Jesus die in Buried Onions?
Quick answer:
In Buried Onions, Jesús, Eddie's cousin, dies a tragic and violent death. Despite having a new girlfriend and job, Jesús is fatally stabbed in the heart by a man wearing yellow shoes in a nightclub bathroom. This incident occurs after Jesús comments on the man's shoes. Eddie, driven by Dolores and Angel, seeks revenge but realizes the wrong person is blamed, suspecting Angel's involvement in the murder.
Jesús is Eddie's cousin, and like many young men in this part of the world, he dies a tragic, violent death. What's especially tragic about Jesús' death is that it comes at a time when he seems to be getting his life together. He has a new girlfriend, a new job, and everything seems to be going well for him.
One night, however, it all ends in tragedy. Jesús is in the bathroom of a nightclub. A guy comes in wearing yellow shoes. Jesús looks down at the guy's shoes and makes a comment. Suddenly, the man in the yellow shoes pulls out a blade and stabs it right into Jesús' heart, killing him instantly.
Later on in the story, Eddie, egged on by Dolores and Angel, seeks revenge for his cousin's brutal murder. Although Eddie manages to track down a guy wearing yellow shoes, it soon becomes clear that he had nothing to do with Jesús' killing, leading Eddie to believe that perhaps Angel might have killed him instead and just wanted to cover up his involvement.
