Two aspects help to mitigate and largely alleviate the book's clear dogmatic tendencies. Firstly, Waugh demonstrates fairness by recognizing opposing perspectives, portraying them as sincerely held and, considering some of the superstitions that some Catholics still maintain, completely reasonable. In fact, many Catholic readers of Brideshead Revisited were quite offended by its sometimes satirical depiction of certain beliefs and practices.
