How does Bernard prevent the DHC from sending him to Iceland in Brave New World?
Quick answer:
Bernard Marx prevents the DHC from sending him to Iceland by exposing the Director's secret. During a trip to a Savage Reservation, Bernard discovers Linda, a former World State resident, and her son John, whom she had with the DHC. Bernard brings them back to the World State, where John publicly calls the DHC "father" during a confrontation. This revelation humiliates the Director, forcing him to resign before exiling Bernard.
As an undesirable and unpopular Alpha, Bernard Marx often blames his
inferiority complex on the World State. He is very vocal in his criticisms of
society, and it causes the DHC, or the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning,
to contemplate sending him to Iceland. Things work in Bernard's favor, however,
while he is on vacation in a Savage Reservation in New Mexico.
There, Bernard meets Linda, a former resident of the World State who was
separated from her group while on vacation. She has given natural birth to a
son named John who has learned to read and communicate his ideas entirely from
the works of Shakespeare. Bernard learns that John is actually the biological
son of the DHC. Seeing this as an opportunity to rid himself of his boss, he
brings Linda and John back to the World State. When John sees the DHC, he calls
the DHC "father," causing the Director to resign in shame before he can exile
Bernard.
In this chapter, the Director calls Bernard Marx to him. He says that Bernard has been convicted of having improper beliefs and doing improper things. Bernard is accused of many things, including an unorthodox sex life.
What Bernard does here is the perfect response to this particular accusation. He brings Linda into the room and has her identify the Director. She tells everyone that he is "Tomakin" the man who is the father of her child. This completely humiliates the Director.
This happens in the Fertilizing Room at the Centre.
