"Big Red" by Jim Kjelgaard follows the protagonist Danny in his first steps toward adulthood. Danny and his father Ross live a hardy life in the Wintapi forest. They are mostly self-sufficient, finding their own food through trapping, fishing, and hunting.
One day Danny visits the owner of the land they live on, Mr. Haggin. Danny is overjoyed to meet Mr. Haggin's prize Irish setter Red. His employee, Mr. Farley, works for Mr Haggin as a dog trainer. Haggin's recognizes and fosters the bond between Danny and Red. They compete in a dog show and go on a number of wilderness adventures involving an escaped convict as well as wild animals such as Old Majesty, a dangerous bear.
