"What Therefore God Hath Joined Together, Let Not Man Put Asunder"

Context: Jesus after leaving Galilee and going into Judea beyond the Jordan, is approached by the Pharisees and asked whether it is lawful for a man to put away his wife for any cause. Jesus replies that when God created them he created male and female. And because, He says, of this fact, the man leaves his father and mother and cleaves to his wife. The two then become one body; they are no longer two. With this reasoning, He proclaims the law of marriage and divorce:
Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
