One injustice or needless pain that Barbara Ehrenreich experiences in “Serving in Florida” involves her living situation. She can’t afford an apartment close to job opportunities. She has to get a place thirty miles away from Key West. In a just society, people should be able to live close to their jobs, especially if their job is only paying them $6 or $7 an hour.

A second injustice or needless indignity is the interview process. When Ehrenreich goes to interview for a job at the Winn-Dixie grocery store, she is interviewed by a computer. This process comes across as needlessly inhumane and apathetic.

A third injustice or needless humiliation connects to drug testing. It seems like employees should have a right to do what they want with their bodies as long as it doesn’t adversely impact their work. It doesn’t feel fair that someone should have to pee in front of a stranger just so they can get a minimum wage job stocking cereal boxes.

As for a fourth example, think about the high turnover rate or the “side work” involved in waitressing.
