From the moment Edna meets Robert, she becomes acutely aware that every decision has consequences. Remaining with Léonce would mean continuing to lead an unfulfilled life. At first, she doesn't fully realize that she has the power to make choices that result in different outcomes. Once she eventually comprehends this, she feels an unparalleled sense of liberation. However, this newfound freedom is short-lived. Edna quickly learns that exercising free will comes with obligations that are nearly as limiting as her marriage. Her loveless affair with Alcée and Robert's inability to reciprocate her love reveal the harsh truth of her predicament. No matter what decisions she makes, Edna understands she can never be entirely free within the boundaries of her society.

Expert Q&A

Was Edna's life-changing decision at the end of The Awakening courageous or imprudent?

Edna's decision to end her life is based on her lack of hope that things will change and on her own inability to face things as they are: call it despair and cowardice. There is nothing brave about her actions, which seem to be an act of cowardice because she knows how to swim, but does not want to do it.
