Powell is a very “British” writer. The characteristics of his fiction, its style and themes, are of a piece with the mainstream of the British novel of manners. Writing in this tradition stems from Henry Fielding and Jane Austen and includes William Makepeace Thackeray, Anthony Trollope, Benjamin Disraeli, William Hurrell Mallock, and Ford Madox Ford. Among Powell’s contemporaries, Aldous Huxley, Evelyn Waugh, Ivy Compton-Burnett, Barbara Pym, and Kingsley Amis are all of this tradition.
