- Chinua Achebe's debut novel, Things Fall Apart, was released in 1958. It narrates the tale of Okonkwo, a deeply proud and stern individual who struggles to cope with the disintegration of his traditional village life.
- A Man of the People was Achebe's final novel before taking a lengthy break from writing. Upon his return with Anthills of the Savannah, many critics saw it as a natural follow-up to A Man of the People, which foreshadowed the political coups that would trouble Nigeria.
- Published in 1981 by William Boyd, A Good Man in Africa is an acclaimed story set in West Africa. It follows a man whose political aspirations are continually thwarted.
- James Ngugi's 1994 novel, Grain of Wheat, takes place in a war-ravaged Kenya. The story centers on five friends who must each make individual choices, with each choosing a distinct path. The novel implies that politicians, rather than the general populace, reap the most from independence.
- Harold Scheub's 2000 compilation, A Dictionary of African Mythology: The Mythmaker As Storyteller, includes four hundred myths and stories that he collected during his travels across Africa.
- Published in 1990, African Canvas: The Art of West African Women showcases the pottery, murals, and body art created by West African women. The book includes a foreword written by Maya Angelou.
