Feminist scholar, political activist, and author, Angela Yvonne Davis was born in 1944. During the 1960's, she acted as a leader with the Communist Party of the United States and also worked as a professor with the University of California. Davis has been considered controversial for her association with the Communist Party and was even arrested (though cleared of charges) for involvement in a courtroom shooting. Davis is one of the founders of Critical Resistance, an organization which seeks to abolish the American prison-industrial complex. Since the late 1960's, Davis has spoken publicly on issues such as racism, feminism, the death penalty, prison reform, and much of her written work draws from Marxism to examine structures of race, class, and economy in America.

Angela Davis is still living, now seventy-two years old.
