In an Antique Land by Amitav Ghosh is a non-fiction novel that tells the story of the author’s quest to find information about an Indian slave who died in the twelfth-century. The author is a renowned writer in India. He wrote the book to enlighten the reader about the Indian culture and its evolution. One of the main themes in the book is racial stereotypes. Ghosh reveals that there have been many misunderstandings about the Indian culture and he aims to clarify them.

The author discusses how he came to know of the Indian slave. According to him, the slave was first mentioned in 1942. Information about him came from a letter from his master that was written in 1148 AD. Using the letter as a reference, the author gives the reader useful and interesting historical information. For instance, he notes,

In the summer of its writing, Palestine was a thoroughfare for European armies.

The author writes the book with a lot of accuracy and it is clear that he researched all the information he gives the reader since he refers to several primary sources. Therefore, all the facts are backed with evidence.
