Chapter 75 Summary
Samwell visits Gilly, who now nurses her own son as well as Mance Rayder's. He reflects on all that has happened as he leaves her. Members of the Night's Watch have come from Shadow Tower and Eastwatch, though Castle Black's hall was destroyed during the fighting. The brothers now must choose their new leader. Cottor Pyke and Ser Denys Mallister have put both their names in for selection, as have Bowen Marsh and Janos Slynt. Every day, Pyke and Mallister lose votes, while Janos Slynt gains ground. Sam goes to see Jon, and he asks whether he should send Gilly and her boy to his parents with a letter claiming the child as Sam's bastard. Jon advises Sam to be cautious, though he points out that it could mean a better life for them. Sam does not tell Jon that Bran is still alive and that he is north of the Wall in search of a three-eyed crow. Jon worries that it will only be a matter of time before Slynt becomes the new Lord Commander. When Sam next eats with his friends, he suggests that one of them talk to Pyke and Mallister about joining forces against Slynt. Pyp suggests that Sam, the son of a lord, do it.
