Chapter 69 Summary

Jon and the others are beyond exhaustion after fighting the wildlings for days. The wildlings have a massive army, and every morning they launch arrows at the men atop the Wall. Only one man has died, but Jon can tell that the others are growing increasingly tired. They have mounted strawmen and bet on which strawman will gather the most arrows to keep their spirits up. The wildlings have spent days cutting down trees and now have made a wooden "turtle" to protect them from stones and fire arrows as they attack the gate. However, Jon has filled barrels with stone and water, now frozen, which he and the others drop on the wildlings as they reach the base of the Wall. With the latest attack finished, Jon descends from the Wall to sleep. When he wakes, there are four brothers of the Night's Watch standing over him. They are led by Ser Alliser Thorne and Lord Janos Slynt, who accuse Jon of treachery and of desertion. They interrogate him in spite of Maester Aemon's protestations that Jon has led the Night's Watch against the wildling army. They do not care and when they try to take him away, Jon strikes out at Thorne, which they declare proof of Jon's wildling heart.
