Chapter 57 Summary

Daenerys and her army have arrived before Meereen's walls. The city is as large as Astapor and Yunkai combined. The men hide behind the city walls, though one hero strides before the walls challenging any man of Dany's army to come face him. Agoo, Jhogo, and Rakharo demand permission to face the hero, but Dany is unwilling to sacrifice her best scouts. Though Ser Jorah commends her, Arstan warns that the hero builds courage in the hearts of his men. Dany has other concerns: though her army is larger, her people will soon run out of food. She summons Strong Belwas, the man she can most easily afford to lose, to face the hero. Strong Belwas wins, though it does not solve Dany's larger problems. They consider a variety of methods of attack, but dismiss them all until Brown Ben Plumm of the Second Suns suggests that they attack through the sewers. She decides to consider the option and dismisses the men. Alone, she wonders what it would be like to sleep with Daario Naharis. Dany goes riding among her people, who greet her as "Mother," until the mercenary Mero attacks her. He is about to strike when Arstan Whitebeard arrives with his staff and dispatches him. Ser Jorah cannot believe that an old man defeated the mercenary. Dany demands that they knight Arstan, but both men refuse. Arstan explains that he is actually Barristan the Bold, the Lord Commander of King Robert's Kingsguard. He apologizes for serving King Robert and asks to serve Dany. He then tells her that someone has informed on her, though Dany cannot believe that Ser Jorah would have betrayed her. Jorah explains that he only did it before he came to know and love her; he did it so that he might be allowed to return home. Dany, furious, considers what she should do with them.
