Chapter 45 Summary
Catelyn notices that Robb has said farewell to his queen three times now: twice at Riverrun, where they left her, and once more when she came galloping in the rain to join him again. Robb, touched but irritated by the delay, sends her back to Riverrun. He has accepted Catelyn's advice that Lord Frey might take offense at her presence, or worse, insult her in front of Robb. She worries, however, that Robb holds the advice against her now that he is left without his bride. As they journey, it rains steadily. Robb does not improve Catelyn's mood when he announces that he intends to name Jon Snow his heir so that Sansa and her husband, Tyrion Lannister, cannot inherit Winterfell if he dies. Catelyn names his decision folly and worries again that she has angered Robb, her last remaining son. The only good tidings they receive comes with Lord Jason Mallister, of Seaguard, who brings a ship captain with news that Balon Greyjoy has died. His brothers, Victarion and Euron Crow's Eye, will now fight for the Iron Islands, which means they will have to withdraw some of their men from the north. Still, the Ironborn hold Moat Cailin, which remains the key to retaking Robb's lands. Robb announces that he will contact Howland Reed, who will give his army safe passage through the marshlands. He also announces that Catelyn will travel to Seaguard, which she interprets as a punishment. He then presents a decree for his lords naming his new heir. Robb has big plans, but first they must reach the Twins to marry Edmure Tully to Lord Frey's daughter and Robb's army to his.
