Chapter 44 Summary

Jaime leaves the Harrenhal with Qyburn and Steelshanks, a soldier who is in charge of his escort. They decide to avoid the kingsroad to ensure that Jaime arrives safely in King's Landing. Along the way, Jaime recalls when he swore his oath to Aerys, the Mad King, at the Harrenhal during Lord Whent's tourney. Aerys, however, had not allowed Jaime to compete, declaring that Tywin's son and heir was now his. When the party stops for the night, Jaime dreams that he has returned to Casterly Rock. There, he sees all of his forebears and Cersei as well. They abandon him to the dangers that lurk in the depths of the caste, but Brienne arrives and stays, explaining that she swore an oath to protect him. After, he sees the faces of all the men—Lord Eddard Stark, Ser Arthur Dayne, and more—that judge him for his broken oaths. He awakens, determined to return to the Harrenhal. There, he finds Brienne fighting a bear in a pit with a dull tourney sword. Jaime leaps into the pit, unarmed. Steelshanks kills the bear with a crossbow in order to ensure that Jaime lives. When Brienne asks why he came for her, Jaime explains that he dreamt of her.
