Chapter 37 Summary
Jaime goes to Harrenhal's bathhouse to bathe for the first time since his arrival. Lord Roose Bolton has ordered that Jaime dine with him come evening. Jaime finds Brienne in the bathhouse and talks to her. In the hot water, he finds himself explaining how the Mad King prepared to burn King's Landing before it could fall. Jaime prevented it when he killed the king. He also recalls that Pycelle had urged the king to open his gates to Tywin, while Varys had warned against it. Jaime collapses after his story, but Qyburn gives Jaime a concoction that will wake him up. Brienne dresses Jaime and helps him reach Lord Bolton. Bolton explains why Hoat cut Jaime's hand off. When the war ends, the Brave Companions will be pardoned by neither side. Their only hope lies in capturing Jaime and giving him to the Karstarks in exchange for lands in the north, far from Lord Tywin's wrath. Bolton explains that he, too, might be held responsible for what has happened to Jaime since Hoat is his man. Jaime agrees to explain that Bolton had nothing to do with his missing hand in exchange for safe passage to King's Landing. Brienne insists that she will go with Jaime to King's Landing, but Bolton refuses. In the meantime, he will have to go to King Robb's wedding at the Twins.
