Chapter 35 Summary
Catelyn's father, Lord Hoster Tully, is dead. In Winterfell, the Starks are buried in their crypt, but the lord of Riverrun is put into a boat that is sent down the river. A fire arrow turns the boat into a pyre. Edmure, Catelyn's brother and now the lord of Riverrun, tries three times to hit the ship with his fire arrow but fails. Ser Brynden manages in his stead. Robb soon approaches with news that Sansa has been married to Tyrion Lannister. Catelyn is shocked given that Tyrion had sworn in court to return Sansa to them in exchange for Jaime Lannister, an exchange that Catelyn had tried to bring about through treachery. There is so little hope left, but Catelyn tries to comfort Robb, who is losing the war even though he has won every battle. Lord Frey has sent messengers with his terms for peace between his house and Robb's: Lord Edmure is to marry his daughter and Robb himself is to come to the wedding. They have no choice, and Edmure agrees to marry her. They Freys also bring word that Winterfell has been sacked by Ramsay Snow, Lord Roose Bolton's bastard son, which makes Robb all the more determined to defeat his enemies. Catelyn, however, would prefer that her son bend the knee and bring the north peace once again.
