Chapter 30 Summary

Jon and the wildlings arrive at the Wall. It is massive, but it is easier to climb here. There are hills, and the forest has been allowed to creep up on the Wall. Jarl and his men break into several teams, climb a sentinel tree, and start to climb up the ice. It takes them hours. Jarl's team is the fastest until a treacherous patch of ice breaks and they drop to their death. Jon reflects that the Wall defends itself. Styr and his men burn the bodies. When the wildlings reach the top of the Wall, they send down rope but two of the Thenns still die climbing. Ygritte tells Jon that the Wall is not made of ice; it is made of blood. When she gets to the top, she tells Jon that she nearly fell. It was almost as though the cold Wall was trying to shake her off to her death. Jon sees tears in her eyes and comforts her, but she refuses his comfort explaining that she is not frightened. She is crying because the wildlings opened hundreds of graves looking for the Horn of Joramun, which is said to have the power to bring down the Wall, but they never found it. The Wall will be allowed to stand.
