Chapter 22 Summary
Arya watches as Lem and Tom search for Lord Beric Dondarrion. They start at a small keep, where the maester reports that Lord Beric was hanged half a year before. No, they reply: Thoros cut him down before he died. They next search for the Lady of the Leaves and find her in a hidden village that is built in the woods' canopy. She reports that the Mountain killed Lord Beric by putting out his eye, but they dismiss it as old news. They later meet an old woman who tells them about her dreams. In them, she has seen a shadow with a burning heart killing a golden stag. She sees a drowned crow with seaweed on the shoulder of a man standing on a bridge. And she sees a female wolf that becomes a fish; it dies and until she opens her eyes, the visions are terrifying. They ignore her. Arya wonders why Lord Beric is so hard to find and Tom explains that he moves about a lot to protect himself from Gregor and his "Tickler." Arya recalls how Polliver used to torture the villagers he found. They next make for Acorn Hall, but only find Lady Smallwood, who gives Arya a new dress of acorns. Arya soon ruins it and the next day Lady Smallwood gives Arya the clothes her son used to wear until he died at seven years old. She tells Arya that she is pretty and urges her to be brave.
