Chapter 20 Summary

Catelyn watches as they bring the corpses into hall. Lord Rickard Karstark and his men have killed two children, a Frey and a Lannister, in Robb's charge to exact vengeance for the death of Lord Karstark's sons in the battle of the Whispering Wood. Jaime Lannister killed them, Catelyn set Jaime free hoping to exchange him for her daughters, and so Karstark declares that Catelyn is as guilty as he is. Robb disagrees. He orders Karstark's men hanged. Privately, he shows his frustration to Catelyn, Lord Edmure of Riverrun, and to Ser Brynden. Lysa Arryn has not acknowledged his letters. Now, it is clear that he will lose the Karstarks as well. Given that he has also lost the Freys, Catelyn wonders if she is witnessing the beginning of Robb's defeat. The next day, Robb has Lord Rickard brought to him. He executes Karstark himself, though not until after the rebel lord announces that they are kin and that Robb will curse himself by slaying him. By the end of the execution, there is blood everywhere. Later, Robb's bride, Jeyne, comes to see Catelyn, asking counsel. Catelyn advises her to be patient: Robb will come to her when she is ready. In the meantime, Jeyne should focus on providing Robb with an heir.
